about the film
Kathy Deane is a passionate archaeologist, who lives with Tim, a successful architect. On the surface life is good until she is diagnosed with a rare brain condition. Fronto-Temporal Degeneration affects the temporal lobes, which govern empathy and the higher functions, such as planning and decision-making. Rather than face up to her illness, Kathy leaves the safety of her marriage for Nick, a man she barely knows. A charming drifter, Nick takes Kathy to his childhood home, the Peninsula. She instantly falls in love with this eerie, atmospheric merging of land, sky and water that seems cut off from the rest of the world. Kathy is very keen to settle down here, much to Nick’s unease; he has no desire to settle anywhere. Fearing that the natural landscape is under threat from development, Kathy vows to protect the Peninsula at all costs. Her misguided actions, however, bring a reckoning: she cannot escape the disease. But having accepted she is aware that she is unaware, Kathy becomes equally determined to rectify her mistakes, and reclaim her integrity.
Second Spring is structured so that the audience only knows what Kathy knows, when she knows. This allows the story to unfold in a mysterious and subtle way, not often seen in cinema, giving the viewer a unique insight into her deteriorating mind.
